What Is an IUD?
An IUD (intrauterine device) is a small device placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It is one of the most effective forms of contraception available, and once in place, you do not have to do anything daily, weekly, or monthly.
There are two main types:
Hormonal IUD

pregnancy. Beyond contraception, it can also significantly reduce heavy or painful periods, making it a popular choice for women managing both.
Depending on the brand, a hormonal IUD can be effective for up to five years.
Copper IUD
Hormone-Free Protection
The copper IUD works without hormones, making it an excellent option for women who prefer to avoid hormonal contraception altogether. It uses copper to create an environment that prevents fertilisation and can remain effective for up to ten years.
A copper IUD can also be used as emergency contraception when inserted within a short window after unprotected sex. Speak with your GP as soon as possible if this applies to you.
What Is an Implanon?
Implanon ( also known as the contraceptive implant or Nexplanon) is a small, flexible rod, about the size of a matchstick, inserted just under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a low, steady dose of progestogen to prevent pregnancy for up to three years.
Once inserted, it is invisible, requires no daily attention, and is one of the most effective contraceptive methods available, with a success rate of over 99%.
