Skin Procedures by Your Local GP

Skin Procedures

Minor skin procedures are a common part of general practice care.

Mambourin Doctors, our GPs are experienced in performing a range of skin procedures in-clinic, saving you the time and cost of a specialist referral for many straightforward concerns.

What Are Minor Skin Procedures?

Minor skin procedures are small, in-clinic treatments used to remove, treat, or examine skin lesions, growths, or abnormalities. They are typically performed under local anaesthetic and most patients are in and out within a single appointment.

If your GP identifies a skin concern during a consultation or skin check, they may recommend a minor procedure to address it promptly and appropriately.

Procedures We Perform

Skin Lesion Removal

Removal of benign or suspicious skin lesions, including moles, cysts, lipomas, and other growths. Removed tissue may be sent to pathology for further analysis where clinically indicated.

Excisions

Surgical excision of skin lesions that require complete removal, including areas of concern identified during a skin check. Your GP will discuss the procedure, what to expect, and any aftercare requirements before proceeding.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and remove certain benign skin lesions such as warts, sunspots, and seborrhoeic keratoses. It is a quick, in-clinic treatment with minimal downtime.

Skin Biopsies

Where a lesion requires further investigation, your GP may perform a skin biopsy to collect a small tissue sample for pathology. Results are discussed at a follow-up appointment.

Wound Care & Dressings

Our team can assist with wound assessment, cleaning, and dressing for minor cuts, lacerations, and post-procedure care.

Ingrown Toenail Treatment

Assessment and management of ingrown toenails, including minor procedural treatment where appropriate.

Do I Need a Skin Check First?

In many cases, yes. If you have noticed a new or changing spot, or have a lesion you are concerned about, we recommend booking a skin check first. Your GP will assess the area and determine whether a procedure is appropriate and necessary.

If you have already had a skin check and your GP has recommended a procedure, you can book a dedicated procedure appointment directly.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your GP will explain the procedure clearly before starting, including what it involves, how long it will take, and what to expect during recovery. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions before proceeding.

Most minor procedures involve:

  • A small injection of local anaesthetic to numb the area
  • The procedure itself, which is typically brief
  • A dressing applied to the treatment site
  • Aftercare instructions to take home
  • A follow-up appointment if pathology has been sent or suture removal is required

When to See a GP About Your Skin

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and early detection is important. You should consider seeing a GP if you notice:

  • A new spot or lesion that has appeared recently
  • A mole or spot that has changed in size, shape, or colour
  • A lesion that bleeds, itches, or does not heal
  • Any skin concern that is causing you worry

When in doubt, get it checked. Your GP can assess the concern and advise on the appropriate next step.
